Heat Pumps

How do Heat Pumps work?

Basically like a fridge in reverse! 
  1. A heat pump contains refrigerant, which is colder that the outside air (boiling point -48.5 C). Air is drawn into a heat exchanger where the refrigerant absorbs the latent heat from the outside air and evaporates. 
  2. The vaporised refrigerant is then compressed increasing its pressure and temperature, (effectively concentrating the heat).
  3. This hot vapour is condensed in the second heat exchanger and the heat is then transferred to water for space heating or domestic hot water after which the vapour condenses back into a liquid.
  4. The liquid refrigerant passes back through an expansion valve, ready to start the cycle again.

Main benefits of Daikin Heatpumps

If we look at an 80m house using 250kWh/m/yr for heating, we can develop a cost comparison between a high efficiency oil boiler and a Daikin Alterma Heat pump.

High efficiency Condensing Oil Boiler

  • A litre of Home Heating Oil provides 10.55kWh units
  • One litre of Home Heating Oil costs  €0.81
  • 1 kWh unit costs  €0.076
  • High efficiency boiler operating at 95% efficiency
  • An input of 21,000kWh/yr. is needed to provide a 20,000kWh/yr. output. 
          21,000 x €0.076 cents = €1,596/yr.

Daikin Heatpump
  • ESB Day Rate is currently €0.15/kWh & Night Saver Rate is  €0.08/kWh unit
  • Heatpump run 60% day rate / 40% night rate
  • Average kWh unit cost of  €0.13
  • Daikin Alterma Heatpump has a Coefficient of Performance on average of 3.5 (1kWh consumed = 3.5kWh of heat outputted)
  • 20,000 kWh units of heat requires 5,714kWh units of energy to run the heatpump
  • Heatpump cost for house = 5,714 x €0.13c = €742.82
          €1,596 - €742.82 = €853.18
          This represents a saving on heating costs of almost 54% per annum.
