Banks Helping to Improve Energy Efficiency
With ever increasing fuel costs, harsher winters and reduced incomes a “heat or eat” phenomenon has developed. This is especially problematic amongst the elderly in Ireland, with 62% reporting that they were worried about the cost of keeping warm. More than half of older people have been forced to go without food or clothing to pay for heating, according to The Fuel Poverty, Older People and Cold Weather study on fuel poverty.
Although there has been plenty of publicity about Insulation and Energy Efficiency grants there are still hundreds of thousands of homes in Ireland that are poorly insulated and using inefficient costly methods of heating.
There is however more help at hand. Several Banks have now got on board with SEAI Better Energy Homes Scheme and are offering special ‘Retrofit mortgages’ to help pay for retrofitting of energy saving changes to your home.
The ‘Retrofit Finance Initiative’ as well as ‘Green Loans’ enables you to take out a mortgage top-up in order to help you cover the shortfall of upgrade costs.
In the case of older houses with poor BER ratings the savings achievable on energy bills could even cover the cost of the loan.
